Day 11--Lynchburg, VA

After leaving Emerald Isle, it was a five hour drive up to Lynchburg which led to....

The Car Ride Question of the Day that Dad has No Idea How to Answer:
At a gas station deep in the heart of Tobacco country North Carolina each kid is debating which candy bar they should buy when Brady asks "Dad, can I get some tobacco?"

We drove straight to the campus of Liberty University because Coach Layer was there wrapping up a week of team camp.  The campus is incredible.  A football stadium that is big-time  for a 1-AA school, a baseball stadium that is easily the nicest college baseball stadium I've ever seen.  A "ski" mountain made of astroturf that students can ski or intertube down whenever they want.  A $50 million brand new library.  It's an impressive place.

Here's a view of Lynchburg and Liberty from the "ski" mountain.

Coach Layer gave us the tour of his new basketball practice facility and their arena, the Vines Center before we headed to his house to relax for the evening.  I remember well the look in his eyes after a long week of basketball camp....I don't miss that exhaustion.  Oh, wait, that's what it feels like after a week of Young Life camp!

The evening was relaxing sitting around the Layer's house on their screened in porch, drinking ice tea, catching up with old friends, and watching the kids play wiffle-ball and chase fireflies.  Sounds like a perfect southern night doesn't it?

Here's Macy after capturing some lightning bugs in a bottle.  She didn't have the heart to keep them in the jar for very long before she let them go.

Dale and Brenda are great friends and we wish we could've spent more time in Lynchburg with them.  We were all saying that it's hard to believe that Dale and I coached together for only 18 months at Colorado State and yet we forged such a deep friendship that has lasted through the years.
